A 10,000 word essay journeying through the turbulent history of ramen. From it’s Chinese and colonial origins to it’s contemporary manifestation as the trendy, boutique and marketable product that is the face of both Japan and gentrification, The Current State of Ramen explores the political-economic backdrop that has shaped the bowl. Authenticity, domestic economic conditions and foreign policy all play a part in telling the story of how ramen suddenly popped up everywhere in the 2000’s. This piece gives an intimate look at many of Sydney’s most well-known ramen shops, analysing every aspect of the business to answer this question, as well as looking at what it takes to survive in the food industry.
