Contradictions Within Traffic Engineering: The Consequences of Induced Demand

Traffic Analysis

Beaches Link Tunnel

A 54-page original & multi-disciplinary analysis on a real existing project, drawing from information found in published professional, legal and technical documents (EIS, scoping reports, legislative reports, etc.).

Using Aimsun traffic modelling software, I analysed the local transport network effects of the proposed Beaches Link Tunnel project in North Sydney. The results of my simulation reflected the published results in the EIS. The addition of capacity inevitably increases traffic all throughout the network, causing more delays due to the effects of induced demand.

The piece also examines the often conflicting nature of the engineering profession. Whether it is a contractor writing the EIS for one project to justify the construction of another project that they’re a part of, or the very tools traffic engineers use enabling an ‘endless growth’ mindset, my research highlights some key problems that plague the contemporary construction industry.
